One morning of this journey through Venezuela's jungles, mountains and rivers, you'll wake up in your hammock on an island below Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall. It's a sunrise you won't forget. This seven-day adventure goes deep into the Venezuelan Guayana, a dramatic and unspoiled region of soaring table mountains (tepuys) and deep river valleys deep in Amazonian jungle. The English writer Arthur Conan Doyle dubbed this magical landscape, rich in flora and fauna and home to the majority of the country’s Indian groups, “The Lost World.” The journey starts with a Cessna flight into remote Ciudad Bolívar, a old Spanish port town on the banks of the Orinoco River. From there the rugged landscape demands that trip participants travel by 4-wheel-drive jeep, river boat and on foot. Be prepared to negotiate steep jungle trails during day hikes and sleep in tents and hammocks outfitted with mosquito nets. You’ll navigate the Churum and Carrao rivers by boat to Cañón del Diablo (Devil’s Canyon), then hike to an overlook of Angel Falls, which pours from a heart-shaped tepuy named Auyantepuy. After navigating by rivers along cliffs and skirts of Auyantepuy, you’ll trek to views of the three cataracts that pour into Canaima Lagoon and visit the Pemon Indian Community. Much of this trip takes places within Parque Nacional Canaima, Venezuela’s second-largest national park and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
