You may have seen the Grand Canyon, but chances are you’ve never even heard of the Great Crevice, a spectacular 820-foot-deep canyon in remote Venezuela. On this 10-day adventure you’ll visit the Great Crevice and one of the tallest waterfalls in the world, Kukenan Falls (2,000 feet). This trek explores Mount Kukenan in the Venezuelan Guayana, a dramatic and unspoiled region of soaring table mountains (tepuys) and deep river valleys covered in Amazonian jungle. The English writer Arthur Conan Doyle dubbed this magical landscape, rich in flora and fauna and home to the majority of the country’s Indian groups, “The Lost World.” A four-wheel drive vehicle will bring you to the Pemon Indian village of Pareitepui. For the next six days you go on foot, fording the rivers Tek and Kukenan and climbing to the flat summit of Kukenan (8,694 feet). Along the way, you’ll visit the Españoles cave at the base of Kukenan Falls and navigate through the rugged labyrinth of rock formations and tea-colored rivers on the top of the mountain. After arriving on the rim of the Great Crevice, you’ll spend a day exploring the area and taking in the spectacular views of the Yuruani, Wadakapipue, Ilú and Tramen tepuys. You’ll need to carry your own clothing and any extra gear you want to bring, but Explora Trek’s top-notch guides take care of the logistics, and porters will carry food, tents and other necessities.
