Trek to Choquequirao: Canyonlands-Incas

Cusco, Peru | by Explorandes

DAY 1: Cusco / Cachora / Chikisca

After leaving Cusco we travel through Antapampa and into Limatambo where we will stop to visit the ancient Inca site of Tarawasi.  From there we follow the road past the Apurimac River, an impressive gorge and the village of Curawasi until we reach the Sayhuite Stone.  The Sayhuite Stone is believed to be a carved map of the Inca Empire.  From there we continue to the village of Cachora, the start of the day's hike.  After meeting the rest of our field crew we will begin our descent enjoying views of the Apurimac canyon, Mt. Padreyoc and Mt. Qoriwayrachina.  We camp next to the river at Chikiska.

DAY 2: Chikiska / Maranpata / Choquequirao

We start the day with traversing the river by footbridge before an uphill hike to a small meadow.  After lunch we continue our ascent and enjoy the Apurimac canyon's vegetation and environment.  As the ascent levels off we will encounter the site of Choquequirao and visit the main plaza there where the terraces feature "The Llamas of the Sun."  We will camp at Marampampa and will have plenty of time to explore these isolated Inca ruins.
