11 Day Private Cycle Safari

Cape Town, South Africa | by Bike and Saddle Eco-Active Holidays

DAY 1: Cape Winelands

We meet at the five-star Cape Grace Hotel in the historic Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, in the heart of Cape Town. After a briefing and introduction from your expert guides, we make our way to the historic town of Paarl in the charming Cape Winelands. This is a stunning region with breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant history and a melting pot of people and cultures. The experience here should form an essential part of your South African holiday.  There really is no better way to experience the rich palette, spectacular geography and diversity of this remarkable region than by taking an eco-active excursion with Bike and Saddle. The Cape is literally surrounded by vineyards, which produce some of the world’s finest vintages. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are world-renowned, attracting visitors from all over the globe. Home to the mighty Paarl Rock, the second largest granite outcrop in the world and the Taal Monument, a tribute to the Afrikaans language. Paarl is a historic town resplendent with natural wonders and some simply superb wine estates. Grande Roche Estate is a national monument and the Cape Dutch styled hotel is a member of the exclusive Mantis Property group. After check-in, and admiring the beautiful grounds which are located in a lush vineyard, we enjoy a sumptuous lunch and guided cycle through the region, stopping off at a number of wine estates along the way. We return for dinner at the award-wining Bosman’s Restaurant.

After breakfast, we head to Stellenbosch and enjoy an exhilarating cycle through the stunning Devon Valley. We visit a world-renowned wine estate and indulge in culinary offerings at the local restaurant. We are given a lesson in making a local "champagne", known as Method Cap de Classique. We take a guided walking tour of Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second oldest town, before returning to Grande Roche for another five-course feast!

DAY 3: Karoo

We leave the Winelands behind and head into the dramatic semi-desert Karoo, a vast expanse of scrub and mountains that covers much of South Africa. We cycle the last 25km into the malaria free Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, home to the Big Five and the only free-roaming white lions in the world. This reserve is known for its history and heritage of the San Bushmen, who are referred to as Africa’s First People. We stay at the luxury tented lodge Dwyka and enjoy a well-deserved gourmet lunch. We take a spectacular game drive, traversing the reserve with a qualified ranger in open Landcruisers, looking for the Big Five, plains game, abundant plant and bird life. We stop for sundowners as the sky turns crimson over the Little Karoo, where stargazing in the evening is simply spectacular!

DAY 4: Sanbona Reserve

We meet in the early morning for a guided cycle through the southern section of the stunning Sanbona Reserve. The towering peaks and the semi-desert Klein Karoo make this one of Africa's most beautiful and dramatic natural landscapes. Here, geology and climate have conspired to offer breathtaking views and a biodiversity only matched by its Bushman heritage.  Not to mention its magnificent presence of both the Africa's Big Five and white lion. After a 22km cycle, we return to the lodge for a well-deserved breakfast. The rest of the morning is at your leisure.  After lunch, enjoy a walk to some of the Bushmen rock art sites. The San people roamed the area for thousands of years, living in harmony with nature through their nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle.  Enjoy one last game drive in the evening and another culinary feast at the open-air boma and traditional African barbecue.  The beauty and splendor of Sanbona is experienced throughout the various guided tours.  One cannot help but be overwhelmed by the sheer majesty of the geological formations, the rich fossil beds, and rock art left behind by Africa’s First People.  The spectacular and diverse vegetation that support the incredible wealth of animal life and the sheer majesty of size, space and quiet, speak directly to the soul. This is the dream of Sanbona realized; this is your opportunity to share in a world far too long forgotten.

We shuttle via Perdepoort Pass to Oudtshoorn, jewel of the Little Karoo and ostrich capital of South Africa. We cycle along the panoramic Montagu Pass with simply sensational vistas across the valley on one of South Africa’s best off road biking routes. After a short break, we transfer to the luxurious Views Boutique Hotel and Spa, in the Garden Route town of Wilderness. Walk along the beautiful beach, keeping an eye out for whales and schools of dolphins frolicking in the Indian Ocean. Spoil yourself with a treatment at the Health Spa and indulge with a decadent eight-course dinner at the Foam Restaurant.

We take a short walk through lush, pristine forest to a waterfall and enjoy a light lunch in the town. After this we hop back on our trusty mountain bikes as we travel along the back roads to explore the charming countryside around the untouched Ruigtevlei, with its collection of tranquil lakes and lagoons. After a busy day, what better way to relax than with sundowners on the beach.

DAY 8: Shamwari Reserve

We join our ranger for a guided cycle through the Shamwari Reserve. This is entirely safe, and offers a plains game, rather than big game, experience as guests can savour the sights and sounds of the bush from the back of a bike. Our expert ranger is armed and equipped with the necessary skills, while we cycle in an open plains area, not through thick bush. We return to the lodge for a well-deserved breakfast after the eco-active adventure of a lifetime! In the afternoon, we enjoy a guided game walk, tracking wild animals through the pristine wilderness, before enjoying a bush dinner with breathtaking views over the reserve.
