Difficulty Levels By Activity

Hike HIKING
Mild
  • No hiking experience required. Short, moderate inclines. Elevation gain under 500 meters.
MODERATE
  • Consistent, but not steep inclines. Decent level of fitness required. Elevation gain under 1200 meters.
DEMANDING
  • Constant inclines, many steep. Good level of fitness required. Elevation gain under 2000 meters.
INTENSE
  • Constant steep hikes and inclines. High level of fitness required. Elevation gain can exceed 2000 meters.
Horse HORSEBACK RIDING
Mild
  • For beginners. Can walk and trout and occasionally cantor short distances.
MODERATE
  • Intermediate rider. Capable of applying basic aids. Can walk, trout and canter comfortably.
DEMANDING
  • Intermediate to advanced rider. In control when trouting, cantering (including 2 point canters) and galloping. Comfortable in the saddle for 6 hours of riding.
INTENSE
  • Expert rider. Can canter and gallop for several hours. Can control a spirited horse in open country. Occasional jumps may be part of the ride.
Cultural MOUNTAIN BIKING
Mild
  • Stable ground. Trail width 48 inches or more. Average trail grade 5% or less. Max grade 10%. No objects on trail. No technical elements.
MODERATE
  • Some variable terrain. Trail width 24 inches or greater. Average trail grade 10% or less. Max grade 15% or greater. Objects 8 inches tall or less. Technical elements 2 inches high or less.
DEMANDING
  • Varied terrain. Trail width 12 inches or more. Average trail grade 15% or less. Max grade 15% or greater. Objects 15 inches tall or less. Technical elements 4 inches high or less.
INTENSE
  • Unpredictable terrain. Trail width 6 inches or more. Average trail grade 20% or more. Max grade 15% or greater. Objects 15 inches tall or less. Technical elements 6 inches high or more
Bike ROAD BIKING
Mild
  • Beginner or novice rider. Flat, easy riding with an occasional short hill or incline. Daily vertical less than 250 feet.
MODERATE
  • Novice to intermediate rider. Flat to 4% inclines. Some hills, but not too long or too steep. Vertical gain under 1200 feet.
DEMANDING
  • Intermediate to advanced rider. 2-10% inclines. Frequent hills and inclines. Extended climbing between 2 and 6 miles. Vertical gain between 1200 and 2500 feet.
INTENSE
  • Expert rider. 2-15% inclines possible. Frequent hills or mountain roads. Extended climbing greater than 6 miles. Vertical gain over 3500 feet probable.
Bike WATER SPORTS
Mild
  • Class 1: Clear water with small waves; these are wide rivers with a few obvious obstructions that are easily missed. Inexperienced paddlers will require little instruction. Self-rescue is easy with short swims.
MODERATE
  • Class 2 - 3: Whitewater rapids with some irregular waves; complex maneuvering required to avoid capsize. Scouting may be necessary for less-experienced parties. Group rescue may be required to avoid long swims.
DEMANDING
  • Class 4: These rivers feature powerful but predictable whitewater, large obstructions, and long stretches of turbulence. Paddlers cope with drops and sharp turns. Scouting is mandatory. Self-rescue may be possible but not without risk of injury.
INTENSE
  • Class 5 - 6: Exceedingly difficult; these runs may once have been classified as impassible. Scouting is necessary but may be dangerous. Proper equipment and experience are necessary. Rescue will be difficult without advanced rescue skills.
Climb ROCK CLIMBING
Mild
  • Half a day or less of technical climbing.
MODERATE
  • Most of a day of roped climbing.
DEMANDING
  • A full day of technical climbing. Ued falls could be fatal.
INTENSE
  • Two or more days of hard climbing. Un-roped falls would result in severe injury or death.
Climb ICE CLIMBING
Mild
  • Flat to vertical, some technical drytooling.
MODERATE
  • Vertical to overhanging with some difficult drytooling.
DEMANDING
  • Overhanging, powerful and technical drytooling.
INTENSE
  • Vertical or steeper with sustained marginal or highly technical drytooling.
Climb ALPINE CLIMBING
Mild
  • Easy. A straight forward route, possibly with a glacier approach and some simple scrambling.
MODERATE
  • Intermediate. Protection recommended. Vertical places or overhangs with good hand-j holds already. Requires some strength.
DEMANDING
  • Increasing number of protection pieces. A higher level of physical fitness is required. Climbing technique and experience are required.
INTENSE
  • Extremely difficult climbing. Requires above average ability and physical fitness. High amount of exposure with few holds.
Climb MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
Mild
  • No prior climbing experience is required.
MODERATE
  • Climbers should be comfortable on 45 degree slopes and should have climbing experience. Climbing resume required.
DEMANDING
  • Climbers should be comfortable climbing on exposed ridges, 45 to 60 degree slopes. Climbing resume required.
INTENSE
  • Climbers should be comfortable on 45 to 60 degree slopes. Climbing experience should include the ability to climb technical rock, snow and ice. Climbing resume required.
Skiing SKIING
Mild
  • The slopes will not be steeper than 30°; it will not be so narrow;will be less than 800m.
MODERATE
  • Few technical difficulties. No steep slopes (35° at the most); will be less than 500m.
DEMANDING
  • Couloirs and steep slopes. Sustained 40° to 45° slopes; will be less than 200m.
INTENSE
  • Very steep slopes, long slopes of 45° and over (over 300m) and slopes of over 100m of 50° and steeper slopes.
Cross-country Skiing CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Mild
  • Short glide on each ski. Other than stone and trees, there is no real danger. The risk is the slope itself.
MODERATE
  • Slightly off-set double-pole on every other leg. Possibility of hitting rocks and be Ing injured by them.
DEMANDING
  • Double-pole on every leg. Requires a good balance. Death in the case of fall is quite probable.
INTENSE
  • Very high speed. Very high cliffs. Hitting an obstacle and falling will result in death.
HELISKIING HELISKIING
Mild
  • Usually open slopes with some short steep steps; Slopes around 30°
MODERATE
  • Short steep steps, some obstacles. Quick turns necessary. Slopes around 35°
DEMANDING
  • Steep slopes, many obstacles require good skiing skills. slopes Around 40°
INTENSE
  • Very dangerous; high risk of avalanche; many obstacles. Often requires jump turns and side slipping; around 45° slopes.
