Adventures in
Brazil
- Overview
Brazil has a spirit of exuberance and vibrant fun throughout its multiethnic culture – which is amply seen by the fun-loving nature of the men and women that come from here – and the country has a topography that seems to be beckoning people to come and experience its thrill. But just as the culture of Brazil has many fragrances, the adventure trips you can do here are rich and varied too.
The Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, contains 33% of all the species in the world and offers a variety of adventure trips. You can find guided as well as unguided jungle hiking trips conducted daily. The best part is that an avid adventurer can kayak or canoe into the rainforest between February and April because the region gets flooded and swamped! Yes, you might even see the famous anaconda. In southern Brazil, Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland of any kind, is home to many types of jaguars, caimans, peccaries, and hundreds of bird species making it a wonderful safari destination. It is easier to see animals here than in the Amazon because they are more out in the open.
Brazil offers many mountain climbing adventures with more than 300 places to climb, most notably in Rio de Janeiro. You must not miss out on the Iguazu Falls, which was one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” candidates, and has 275 different falls. Helicopter tours are available to get a bird’s eye view of this unparalleled place as well as biking tours.
In the state of Goias, there are over 200 caves and many of them are unexplored. The best known cavern, Gruta Terra Ronca, stretches 3 miles long and offers a challenging adventure. Once you venture into the cavern, stalagmites, stalactites and sun-lit chambers await you. If you are in Brazil August 6th, then you may want to visit this famous cave during the Festa do Bom Jesus da Lapa to complement your adventure with a cultural experience.
Water sports buzz around the Joaquina Beach in Santa Catarina, and three beaches near Rio, the Saquarema Beach, the Itacoatiara, and the Buzios. Available adventures include surfing, rafting, kayaking and various other water adventure events. You can also scuba dive and catch sights of various monsters of the deep, including the bull shark.
If you happen to be taking a trip to Brazil during January and February, be sure to catch Carnival, the festive celebration before Lent. You can get the true taste of Carnival events in cities such as Recife and Salvador. However, these times are riotously crowded so it is a good idea to book in advance.
