Venezuela
- Overview
The country of Venezuela has been consistently billed as one of the best countries for an adventure traveler to visit. The country has both the North Atlantic Sea and the Caribbean Sea on its borders and boasts attractions such as Margarita Island, Los Roques Archipelago, Canaima National Park and Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world.
Adventure travelers will find that mountain trekking is quite popular here, especially on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Merida. This region has the some of the highest and most challenging peaks in South America, perfect for the avid adventurer. And while you will find some of the world’s loftiest peaks in Venezuela, there is also an abundance of underwater life here too. Snorkeling and scuba diving off the Mochima National Park just cannot be missed and the entire Los Roques Archipelago is dotted with wonderful coral reefs that are waiting to be explored.
Venezuela is also known for its mysterious underground caves. Adventure travelers have a great time exploring the Cueva del Guacharo, where the enigmatic oil birds reside. Also don’t miss the large mangrove channels of the Morrocoy National Park, a hidden aviary on the Caribbean Sea.
Skiing for the adventure enthusiast is an option at the Cordillera de Merida peaks. These peaks have a special distinction because they have a snowline throughout the year. But, be warned – skiing here is not for the faint-hearted.
You can experience the Venezuelan life just laying around on the beach on Margarita Island. One off the path adventure trip you must do when you are in Venezuela is to ride in the highest cable car in the world, which runs from the city of Merida to the top of the Espejo Peak, a height of over 15,600 feet!
