Horseback Riding

1. Courtesy is the best safety on the trail. Remember that your behavior is a reflection on the horse community as a whole. Your horse may be another trail user's introduction to the horses.

2. Leave one horse’s length between horses; two if trotting.

3. Equestrians have the right of way over other users on all trails. This is an international standard. Walkers have next priority and then cyclists.  Politely encourage cyclists and runners to slow down or stop before passing or overtaking and thank them for doing so.

4. Ride your horse at a controlled speed, especially approaching blind corners.

5. Keep to the right when passing other users.

6. On a hill, if a rider needs to pass you, face your horse downhill

7. Tie a red ribbon to the tail of horses which may kick.

8. Do not ride side-by-side unless the path is wide enough to keep horses from nipping each other.

9. When allowing the horses to drink in a stream, wait until all horses have finished their drink before riding away.
